SEVILLE, Spain – All three U.S. adaptive boats competing at the 2002 FISA World Rowing Championships on the Guadalquivir River in Seville, Spain, won medals on Wednesday afternoon.
In the single sculls race, Scott Brown, from the Philadelphia Rowing Program for the Disabled (PDRP), brought home the gold medal in a time of 4:47.95, while teammate Angela Madsen, from Long Beach Rowing Association, finished second to claim the silver medal. Madsen clocked a 5:03.62. Australia’s Peter Taylor finished fourth.
Brown is the current chairperson of the PDRP, while Madsen is the founder of the California Adaptive Rowing Program. Together, the duo became the first ever fixed-seat boat to complete the 32-mile Catalina Crossing.
In the four with coxswain, the U.S. crew of Lisa Boron, Tracy Lee, Dwayne Adams, Jean Longchamps and Aerial Gilbert finished third to earn the bronze medal. The crew finished in a time of 3:59.97, 17 seconds behind the winning boat from Australia. Australia clocked a 3:42.75 to win the gold medal, while the host country, Spain, captured the silver medal.
Boron, Lee and Adams all row out of the Philadelphia Rowing Program for the Disabled, while Longchamps rows out of Florida International University and Gilbert out of North Bay Rowing Club in California.
